Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with schools suffering the most of the conflict.
