Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Persist in Search for Killer.

Two students who lost their lives in Saturday’s violent attack on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter persisted following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted condolences online, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, family members said.

The victim's identification was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were hurt in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our community”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a room in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a authority told the news agency.

Police that entered the lodging recovered two firearms and magazines when the person of interest was detained, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, a single scholar was discharged from care, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was honored at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his potential.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
